Comment Word Verification

I Turned Off the word verification for comments. It was more of a nuisance than anything. If there comes a time when it's needed to defeat robots, then I'll enable it again.

At first I thought that it was a better behaved device than the one on BB, but this has not turned out to be true. Several times, I have been sure that I typed in the correct code, only to be made to enter a new one. So it's likely that all the word verification systems time out to further defeat robots and alike. Trouble is they also defeat us poor imperfect bloggers.

  1. Hello Terry...
I hate the word verifications...They all look jumbled to me and it takes me a few tries to get it right...lol...
I`m sure there will be alsorts of glitches that we`ll come across but hopefully nothing too major...I`m still having lots of trouble with my Bigblog...Leaving comments is the worst...
Hope you have a lovely weekend..Take care...

  2. I didn't like 'em on BB and now I don't Like 'em 'ere so they're gone.

What's with Gregory T Garden? He left a nasty comment on my latest post on BB. Don't know what he's on about.

Does he go on like this to others, or is he just jealous? Or what?

    Any idea?

  3. G'day Terry, I finally found your site. This is a bit different than BB, but I'm finding my way.Photo's seem to upload quicker. It's a shame they have to give us the verification code, too bad for people who use braille. I read that comment by Gregory and I thought maybe he thought your post about dole bludgers was directed at him. Bye

  4. yes there is a few differences to bb...blog size is a bit of a joke..10mb at bb.....I have been posting on blogger for almost a year and am at 1% of my usage

  5. Hello Terry,

Thanks for your comments regarding my photos.

I don't like those verification numbers, some of them are really hard to read not so much here but in BB.

    Take care,
    Margaret

  6. Hi there Terry, Word verification now I know about, Little miss smarty pants hear watches Leo Leporte on Foxtel (How to channel).

It has nothing to do with the provider of our blogs, the poor pc's can only recognize what it is told and jumbled words don't exist in it vocabulary.....That's why any word verification has trouble.....They are all the same.

At least here on blogger we have a choice not like on BB.

    Take care
    Elle

  7. I read lonziz tonight and am surprised that he finds bb easier..?? Here is so peaceful and little waiting time, commenting and thank you does get tiresome when one has to wait, here it is less of a chore and no time limit.

  8. Hi Terry,

I agree with you about the word verification. I haven't been attacked by a message robot yet so I'll keep it off.

I started doing the comment moderation too but very quickly took that off as well. So far so good.

It is good to have all of that stuff there if you need it but if you don't why put people through the hassle.

    Cheers

    Rudy

  9. Hi there Douga, welcome to my site.

The verification code, as you've probably realised it by now is not mandatory on BS like it is on BB. There are facilities here which BB just don't have - like comment moderation, where the site administrator has to allow or disallow a comment before it appears on the list of posts.

I don't particularly like moderation either, but the nice thing about BS is that, at least you have a choice on the use of these facilities.

Lonz had moderation turned ON on his BS blog at first, and I complained about it in a comment. He removed it soon after, maybe because of my complaint, but the administrator has to go through each comment and moderate them, and that takes precious time away from posting and commenting etc. So that was probably the reason.

If I start to get Yobbos like Gregory T Garden with his rubbish posts over here, I may be inclined to turn moderation on.

If you want to find people's sites over here, you can click the name link at the start of one of that person's comments. That takes you to their profile page. Down the bottom of the profile page there's a link to their blog. The only problem is if they don't share their profile, which on Blogger is also a choice.

  10. Good morning Les. You took the words right out of my mouth (sounds like a good title for a song!). My mobile phne has more memory than BB give you for a blog site! Then make you pay through the nose for 10% of what we get for free over here!

I must say that I can't fathom why Lonz thinks BB is better. I don't agree, but then Lonz has had a lot more experience with blogging than I have, so his words will always carry weight in my book.

  11. Hi Margaret, Hi Elle. I didn't get out of bed until 10am this morning. Slept through to 5:15am, and had to get up for a few minutes, then back to bed again. Tiger is most annoyed this morning that he had to wait so long fior his breakfast.

Oh well, he'll get over it.

Elle, the reason behind the Verification is that the code displayed is in a form that is difficult for software recognition engines to convert to letters and numbers, but is easily understood by humans.

That stops nasty people from writing a program that place garbage comments automatically on peoples posts. The programs can't get past the verification without great difficulty (notice that I didn't say it is impossible). That type of program is a type of Robot.

Sooner or later, we will probably be bothered by one or more of these robots, and will have to enable verification to avoid them.

  12. Hi Lynne, Hi Rudy.

BS is very fast. But it is not without it's problems either. Just recently they were having troubles with picture downloading.

I hope that BS stays fast!

I love not being timed out on my login or my comments.

The creators of the code behind BS used a lot more intelligence with there algorithms than the creators of BB.

They gave us a great deal more flexibility for those that like to use some web coding, while keeping it such that you don't have to, to have a good site. I'm all for BS.

  13. I have had 2 spam comments since I started on Blogger...From what I have noticed they are more prevalent on wordpress...there is a spam filter they use it is probably usable on blogger....I have a look

    ReplyDelete
  14. Hi Les.

Do you mean something that analyses a comment and determines spam content?

    That would be very worthwhile.

which posts did you get the spam on? I want to take a look!

Please get back to me on what you find out about the filter.

  15. Terry the program I was talking about is Akismet it is used on wordpress with much success but hasn't been modified for blogger yet....I remember having a convo about the possibility of that happening about 6months ago...I think it was on problogger.net
There are many add-ons for blogger if you Google "blogger add-ons" you will see a large array of interesting things that make blogs much more attractive and interesting.

There is 2 things called "comments time out" and "auto shut off" which allow you to close off comments in older posts which is something that would be of interest...but I haven't trialed either yet.

I deleted the spam comments...they were both the same and linked to a blog about fishing....

    ReplyDelete
  16. Les, I like the idea of being able to shut off comments for earlier posts.

I could use that on BB with that bloody popular post of mine. Popularity that, though I'm a bit proud of it's popularity, I'd rather do without!

I'll have a look into the various addons available. Thanks for the suggestion!

by the way, have a read of Douga's post. It's enlightening and I strongly recommend everyone read it!

  17. I am pretty sure you can turn the comments off in that post by...editting it and down the bottom turn comments off....I was just on the Bigpond home page reading about the alert about email being sent out asking to send your username and pass word and I noticed that your post is no longer linked from there

I will have a look at douga

    ReplyDelete
  18. Thanks Les. I'll take a look at that in the post edit. I hadn't thought of that. Thanks again!

Thanks for your help. I'm new to blogging and need all the help I can get. I could've done without all this stuff on BB, and I now have a bit more of an idea of how to avoid the unwelcome attention.

But for now, since it's topical, I'll let my post stand. I just hope that I don't have unhappy people ready to bomb my house!

I don't relish the noteriety, but at least it is giving people a portal to vent their feelings. and I don't mind that they dissagree with me at all. So long as they talk about it!

A federal election is one of the most important events that take place in an Australian's life, and it needs evertone to add their feelings, because they are all reflective of the public feeling about the major parties in this election.

Shit - I've gone on and on. Sorry about that. I could put Grotty to shame with my waffling!

  19. had a look at douga's post.

religion is of no interest to me

    ReplyDelete
  20. Hi Les, the point was not the religion so much as a person finding a way to live again after a life gone sour! Whatever way!

Douga has had quite a bad time of it. I guess we all do one way or another.

I also noticed that BPond have changed the page links - I'm relieved!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I agree with you about Douga, I am always touched by someone who turns their life around....no matter what way, it always takes a higher power to have faith in when one is lost and Mr God serves this purpose if one does not takes it verbatim all the time.
    Bloody good on ya Douga

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yeah I would of missed that point.
I generally stop reading when the Jesus religion is mentioned unless it is in a humorous way. There is too much more interesting and valid things to read out there and time is a factor.
I do hope douga finds his place in the world though. I spend many years trying to find my place. One day I realized that my place was where I was standing at the time. And to be at one with the reflection in the mirror too gives a person the ability to move forward.
I dont need to look up at hope but I can see that others do.
